pornhub traffic

Despite the ban on porn sites, Indian citizens have increased the consumption of adult movies on Pornhub, one of the most popular pornographic websites in the world. This is the result of the nationwide lockdown and free access to premium content. during the lockdown, Pornhub unlocked the premium version of the platform for all users globally.

According to a recently published data by Pornhub, the site witnessed a 55% surge on the day one of the lockdown as compared to the daily traffic registered by the company.

The California-based adult entertainment firm also recorded a considerable increment in traffic from March 8. It is to be noted that this was the time when most Indian companies and startups started providing paid leaves or work from home to their employees.

“Stay home and help flatten the curve! Since COVID-19 continues to impact us all, Pornhub has decided to extend free Pornhub Premium worldwide until April 23rd. So enjoy, stay home, and stay safe,” Pornhub said on March 24.

After the announcement of free premium content, the porn company was expecting a surge in the traffic from India. And that happened as expected; the porn site witnessed a 95% surge in traffic on March 27.

Apart from India, the website also witnessed a hike in traffic from other countries including the United States, Italy, and Spain. It is worth noting that these countries are the most hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

For Pornhub, India is one of the largest markets. However, in 2018, the government issued a ban on accessing porn sites and major telecom operators and internet service provides have blacklisted majority of the porn sites since then. Currently, almost 827 websites have been banned by the government.

However, the ban is limited to certain circles of telecom operators. Pornhub said that 91% of Indians still visit the porn site from their smartphones. The company also noted that 85% of total traffic on the site from India is generated by millennials. Many people are using virtual private networks (VPNs) to access banned porn sites.

In situations like COVID-19, a temporary upliftment of the ban may help people to get another source of entertainment and can prevent gatherings.
