Ratan Tata-led Tata Group of Companies has held the position of being India’s largest conglomerate for a very long time till early 2018. However, the scene is now changing in the Indian business sector. HDFC Group has just surpassed the Tata Group to become the most valuable company in the country.
When the markets closed on 27th of December, Tata Group of companies were collectively valued at ₹10,38,290.09 crores whereas HDFC Group companies were valued at ₹10,40,000 crores. The HDFC Group was ahead of the Tata Group by ₹1,710 crores or around 0.16 per cent.
Tat Group has around 30 listed companies while HDFC Group has only 5 listed companies. The subsidiaries of HDFC Group are HDFC Ltd, HDFC Bank, HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company, Gruh Finance Ltd and HDFC Asset Management Company. Please note that HDFC Asset Management Company has just debuted on the stock market this year.
While the Tata Group has some prominent names listed on the stock exchange such as Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, Tata Chemicals, Tata Coffee, Tata Global Beverages, Rallies, Voltas, Tata Communications, Tata Elxsi, Tata Global Beverages, Tata Invest Corp, Tata Motors, Tata Power, Tata Sponge, Tata Steel, Tata Teleservices, Tayo Rolls, The Indian Hotels, Titan and Trent Limited.
Tata Consultancy Services is the single largest company with a market capitalization of ₹7 lakh crores alone. None of HDFC’s subsidiaries can take over Tata individually but together. HDFC has a market capitalization of ₹3.34,000 crores, HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company is valued at ₹79,000 crores, Gruh Finance Ltd is valued at ₹23,000 crores and HDFC Asset Management Company has a market cap of ₹31,500 crores.
Ratan Tata and The Tata Group of Companies has received a lot of media attention over years. However, HDFC lacks the same sort of fame.
